Curriculum Intent Statement

English

We believe that good literacy skills are key to participating and contributing fully to society. We aim to provide a language rich environment that enables all children to develop a broad and ambitious vocabulary.

Reading

At St Leonards we aim for all children to truly love books and ignite their passion for reading by exposing them to a variety of diverse authors, stories and non-fiction texts. When our children leave us, they will have the confidence to be able to express opinions and preferences about what they read and what they enjoy. We believe a love of books widens a child’s imagination, view of the world and ability to build knowledge so that, as they grow, they will be able to read confidently and fluently.

Writing

We intend to develop a love of writing and express their ideas clearly and creatively through the written word. Our children will become critical writers, making choices at word and sentence level that allow them to convey ideas effectively and for a range of purposes. To enable children to do this, we will support all children to write clearly, accurately and coherently through having clear expectations of grammar, handwriting and spelling.

Speaking and listening

We will provide an environment where children are equipped and given opportunities to develop their speaking and listening skills so they can communicate effectively and purposefully. They will be encouraged to use discussion to learn and elaborate on or clarify ideas.
