Developing Phonics

Sounds-Write (phonics)

At St Leonards CE Primary Academy, we teach phonics using the Sounds-Write programme which is a highly effective approach to the teaching of reading, spelling and writing using a linguistic approach from Reception to Year 2.

It is based on three core principles:

1.Teaching the essential skills to be effective readers and spellers through segmenting, blending and phoneme manipulation.

2. Teaching the core conceptual knowledge needed to understand how the alphabetic code works. For example, that letters are symbols that represent sounds; that sounds can be represented by one, two, three and four letters; that one sound can be represented in many ways. Similarly, a spelling can be represented by alternative sounds.

3.Teaching all of the most common representations for the 44 sounds of the English language in the context of real and recognisable words.

Through using Sounds-Write, we are teaching in a clear, cumulative, sequential and structured sequence to ensure children gain the skills to be confident readers and writers.
