Religious Education Intent

Religious education and collective worship

Christian teaching is based on the principles of the Church of England, aiming to promote each child’s spiritual and moral development across the whole curriculum in accordance with the East Sussex County Council’s Agreed Syllabus.

In accordance with statutory requirements, pupils will also learn about other religions, faiths and festivals. We aim to help children to achieve a knowledge and understanding of faiths and develop their own beliefs, whilst recognising and respecting the rights of others to hold different beliefs.

Collective worship

A daily act of worship takes place each day and is Christian-based. This draws and reflects on the traditions of the Church of England as well as celebrating and exploring the values of the Academy and all that it stands for. The Senior Leadership Team, other staff members and pupils participate in these assemblies which may be the whole Academy, in phases or in classes. The Academy is located in the parish of St. Leonards on Sea, and the Academy worships at both St. Leonards and St. Ethelburga.

We continually forge links between the Academy and the wider Christian community and guest speakers are invited to lead worship. Parents are welcome to attend acts of worship on appropriate occasions.

As this is a Church Primary Academy, it is expected that all children will participate in both these activities. Whilst parents have a right to withdraw their children from Religious Education and/or Collective Worship, this will not separate pupils from the religious life of the Academy. Grace is said at lunchtime and prayer at the end of the day. Should a parent wish to withdraw their child, they should speak to the Headteacher.
