READING AT HOME - LEARNING THE FIRST LETTERS AND SOUNDS

 

When reading with your child at home, remember to:

 

  • Point to the letter as you say the sound

  • Ask your child to say the sound and trace their finger over the letter

  • Ask your child to find that letter on the page

  • Read the word to your child and emphasise the sound you are learning

KEY POINTS FOR SUPPORTING AN EARLY READER

 

INSIDE COVER

  • Write the high frequency words and sounds on a whiteboard. 
  • Ask the child to read - rub out only the ones they know. 

 

FRONT PAGE

  • Read the title and look at the illustration.
  • Talk about what they think the book is about 

 

READING EACH PAGE

  • Search for the bits they need to practice (check the white board)
  • Point as you read
  • Say the sounds and read the word

 

UNDERSTANDING

  • Read the page back with them
  • Vocabulary/ Inference / Prediction / Explanation / Retrieval / Sequence
