"Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it" Proverb 22:6
Intent
Our Reception pupils will collaborate thoughtfully and empathetically, recognizing that they belong to a community larger than themselves. They will confidently share their ideas and express their opinions using newly learned vocabulary. They will build core strength, coordination, and agility. Our children will cultivate a passion for reading and become storytellers, writing with clear purpose. They will think mathematically and solve problems effectively. Our children will grow into resilient, creative learners who value and appreciate the natural world.
"For a small child there is no division between playing and learning; between the things he or she does just for fun and things that are 'educational'. The child learns while living and any part of living that is enjoyable is also play". (Penelope Leach)
Implementation
Our Early Years curriculum is enriched by a thoughtfully designed, engaging environment that provides continuous opportunities for learning both indoors and outdoors. This environment offers a range of challenges across all seven areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage. As children develop, our provision adapts to meet their evolving needs and skills, ensuring suitable challenges for every ability level. We believe that a balanced approach - combining adult-led focused learning with uninterrupted child-initiated play, supported by responsive adult interactions - leads to the best outcomes, encouraging children to explore, question, discuss, and think critically.
Phonics and Early Reading
We believe that for all our children to become fluent readers and writers, phonics must be taught through a systematic and structured phonics programme. We have adopted the Sounds-Write programme to plan and deliver daily engaging phonics lessons.
