Our St Leonards Vision

St Leonards CE Academy

Curriculum Intent Statement

Music

The teaching of Music enables personal expression, reflection and emotional  development. It also increases self discipline, confidence, sensitivity and fulfilment as well as helping children to forge links between home, school and the wider world.

At St Leonards, we aim to engage, motivate and inspire pupils to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians, and so increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement.

Music is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity. As pupils progress, they should develop a critical engagement with music, allowing them to compose, and to listen with discrimination to the best in the musical canon. (The National Curriculum)

At St Leonards, it is our intention that every child is provided with the opportunity to develop an appreciation and understanding of Music that they can carry with them throughout their lives.

The key concepts taught in Music at St Leonards are:

  • Listening and Appraising—Children become critical listeners by listening and responding to a wide range of different genres and periods of music.

  • Performing—Children develop their vocal and instrumental skills to strive for musical excellence.

  • Understanding musical elements— Children explore and understand the ‘building blocks’ of music such as dynamics and musical notation.

  • Improvising and Composing—Children create their own music both alone and with others

Music Progression of Skills Y1-Year 6

Aside from music as part of the national curriculum, many children have the opportunity to play a musical instrument. In Key Stage 2 they learn both the recorder and ukulele.

Peripatetic music teachers also visit the Academy and hold classes in instruments such as guitars, violins and keyboards.

Music Development Plan

All schools are encouraged to have a music development plan, as set out in the national plan for music education.

Schools are asked to publish a summary of their music development plan on their website in order to:

  • raise awareness of their music development plan
  • promote the school music offer to parents and prospective parents
  • give greater opportunity for schools and music hubs to work together

Our music development plan is attached below and further information, about our music curriculum, is available on our website.
